This includes only employing auditory perception listening to the voice to describe it. Speech therapists with experience treating patients with voice problems have been trained to describe the pertinent features of a disordered voice. There are two types of perceptual evaluation: informal and formal. The entire session between a therapist and a client involves an informal assessment of perception. The therapist will typically strike up a conversation with the patient on the spot while also taking a case history to learn more about how the client's voice problem started, how it has progressed over time, pertinent medical information, the client's family situation, their way of life, and any traumas that may have affected their voice. Whilst it may appear to the client that the therapist is merely ‘chatting’ on occasion, in reality, the therapist is evaluating the voice on a principled basis.
