An audiometry evaluation is a noninvasive, painless hearing test that assesses a person's ability to hear various sounds, pitches, or frequencies. Patients with tumours in or around the ear may be subjected to audiometry testing to determine whether or not a hearing loss has occurred, as well as to monitor their hearing before and after surgery. It is also used to determine whether hearing aids or surgery would benefit one's hearing. Our ears are divided into three sections: the outer, middle, and inner ear. Audiometry tests can determine whether you have sensorineural (nerve or cochlea damage) or conductive hearing loss (damage to the eardrum or the tiny ossicle bones). A variety of tests may be performed during an audiometry evaluation.
