A cochlear implant is a hearing-improving electronic device. It may be a viable option for people who have severe hearing loss due to inner-ear damage and are unable to hear well with hearing aids. Unlike hearing aids, which amplify sound, a cochlear implant delivers sound signals to the hearing (auditory) nerve by bypassing damaged portions of the ear. A sound processor that fits behind the ear is used in cochlear implants. The processor receives sound signals and sends them to a receiver implanted behind the ear under the skin. The signals are sent by the receiver to electrodes implanted in the snail-shaped inner ear (cochlea). The signals stimulate the auditory nerve, which sends the information to the brain. The brain interprets those signals as sounds, though they will not be identical to natural hearing. Learning to interpret the signals received from a cochlear implant takes time and practice. Most cochlear implant users notice significant improvements in speech understanding after 3 to 6 months of use.
